Abstract: “Nella primavera del 1983 ho intrapreso un viaggio attraverso la mia intuizione che mi ha condotto in Svizzera, Germania e Portogallo. Le immagini sono essenzialmente una reazione alle persone e ai posti che ho visto. Sono montate insieme seguendo il medesimo criterio impulsivo. Anche il suono è stato montato ottimizzando il medesimo principio”. Dopo il “tour de force” intellettuale di “Scissere”, Peter Mettler reagisce con un film che tenta di mettere in gioco una modalità del fare cinema immediata e intuitiva. Il regista si è rapportato ai luoghi visitati e osservati attraverso la macchina da presa come un musicista, improvvisando le riprese alla stregua di “jam session” visive. Realizzato nell’arco di tre mesi, il film si può considerare una sorta di diario di viaggio lirico. Mettler filma intrecciando formati e riprese, intervenendo direttamente sul processo di riproduzione, nel tentativo di evidenziare il punto in cui lo sguardo incontra il punto di rottura della macchina cinema. Analogamente anche la traccia sonora (ottenuta miscelando cinque nastri) anela un tipo di esperienza in grado di superare la presunta oggettività del documentario per abbracciare una percezione più ampia del mondo.
“In the spring of 1983 I made a journey across my insight which led me throughout Switzerland, Berlin, and Portugal. The pictures are essentially my response to the people and the sites I’ve seen. They are edited together following the same method based on impulse. The sound was edited according to this principle as well.” After Scissere’s intellectual tour de force, Peter Mettler tries his hand with a mode of film-making based on immediacy and insight. Mettler related himself with the sites visited and watched through the camera like a musician would, improvising the shots as if they were visual jam sessions. This film was made in three months, and can be considered as a sort of lyrical travel diary. Mettler did his filming by mixing formats and shots, but he also intervened directly in the playback process, trying to highlight the breaking point between subjective gaze and the film machine. Also the sound track, made by mixing five tracks, aims at a kind of experience that overcomes the presumed objectivity of the documentary and embraces a more comprehensive perception of the world.
