Abstract: “Miejsce Urodzenia” può essere considerato il debutto cinematografico di Paweł Łoziński e in qualche modo il film che contiene gli elementi costitutivi della sua ricerca futura: l’attenzione al rapporto interpersonale con i soggetti coinvolti, la storia come lavoro e scoperta continua, i drammi personali come colpe collettive, la solitudine e la solidarietà. Lo scrittore Henryk Grynberg ritorna dagli USA nel villaggio dove lui e la sua famiglia ebrea si rifugiarono durante l’occupazione nazista e dove il padre Abram fu ucciso da qualcuno che ancora non ha un nome. Insieme al regista intraprende un viaggio che è un’inchiesta nel passato e un tentativo di rispondere in modo concreto, senza astrazioni, alle domande ancora aperte sull’olocausto. Girando di porta in porta, guardando negli occhi i protagonisti di quel drammatico momento e attraversandone i luoghi, Grynberg scoprirà l’atroce verità, insieme ai resti del padre. Una verità che deflagra tra le coscienze del villaggio e che il regista documenta, seguendo tutte le espressioni contraddittorie di cui è capace l’essere umano.
“Miejsce Urodzenia” can be considered P. Łoziński’s debut film, and in some way it contains the fundamentals to be found in his future research: attention to the interpersonal relationship with the people involved in the filming, history understood as continuous work and discovery, personal tragedies as collective guilt, loneliness, and solidarity. The writer Henryk Grynberg comes from the US back to the village where he and his Jewish family sought shelter during the Nazi occupation. There his father, Abram, was killed by someone who’s still unnamed. Along with the film-maker, he sets for a journey to investigate the past and try to answer the questions on the Holocaust that still go unanswered in a concrete, non-abstract way. Walking door by door, staring in the eyes of the protagonists of that dramatic era, and travelling across the places where the tragedy was consummated, Grynberg will find the atrocious truth along with the remains of his father. This truth will explode among the consciences in the village, and the film-maker will thus record all the contradictory expressions of the human being.
