Abstract: Si parte da una foto scattata nel 1988 nei Monti dei Giganti, che dividono Polonia e Cecoslovacchia. Alcuni dissidenti dei due paesi si sono segretamente riuniti lì più volte, costruendo ai confini del bosco quella che Adam Michnik ha chiamato "la generazione della cospirazione democratica". La foto mostra alcuni dei dissidenti più famosi: il ceco Vaclav Havel, i polacchi Adam Michnik e Jacek Kuron e altri rimasti anonimi. Diverse le età, diversi gli itinerari spirituali, politici e storici eppure tutti loro, operai o intellettuali, credenti o no, patrioti polacchi o trotskisti internazionali, appartengono a questa lotta dissidente contro i poteri totalitari che esercitano un dominio fatto di paura, repressione e oblio, su quest'altra Europa. Una lotta per i diritti umani organizzata dalla metà degli anni '70 attraverso organizzazioni informali come la Kor in Polonia, Carta 77 in Cecoslovacchia, il movimento Samizdat ungherese. Questo film racconta la storia della lotta contro il totalitarismo, avvenuta in Europa centrale dalla fine degli anni '50 al 1989.
It starts with a photo taken in 1988 in the Giant Mountains, which divide Poland and Czechoslovakia. Dissidents from the two countries secretly gathered there several times, building at the edge of the forest what Adam Michnik called 'the generation of the democratic conspiracy'. The photo shows some of the most famous dissidents: the Czech Vaclav Havel, the Polish Adam Michnik and Jacek Kuron and others who remained anonymous. Different ages, different spiritual, political and historical paths, but all of them, workers or intellectuals, believers or not, Polish patriots or international Trotskyists, belong to this dissident struggle against the totalitarian powers that exercise a dominion made of fear, repression and oblivion over this other Europe. A struggle for human rights organised since the mid-1970s through informal organisations such as Kor in Poland, Charter 77 in Czechoslovakia, the Hungarian Samizdat movement. This film tells the story of the struggle against totalitarianism in Central Europe from the late 1950s to 1989.
