Abstract: La storia del "più grande attore del mondo". Sul palcoscenico che è la vita ha dato il suo contributo al bene dell'umanità. Aveva molti nomi, ma non è mai esistito. Ha vissuto molte vite, ma solo una era quella reale. Nel periodo più buio della storia dell'umanità ha perpetrato la più grande frode della Seconda Guerra mondiale, ingannando l'Alto Comando tedesco nel convincerlo che lo sbarco in Normandia fosse un diversivo e che la vera invasione sarebbe avvenuta nel Pas de Calais. Imprenditore agricolo, poi portiere d'albergo, aveva offerto i suoi servizi agli inglesi per aiutarli, ma il suo piano, troppo ingenuo, era fallito. Lungi dall'essere scoraggiato, si rivolse ai tedeschi e riuscì a convincerli che poteva agire come spia per favorire la causa nazista. Per i nazisti il suo nome in codice era Alaric. Per gli inglesi era Garbo. Per il resto mondo era un mistero assoluto.
The story of the 'world's greatest actor'. On the stage that is life he made his contribution to the good of humanity. He had many names, but he never existed. He lived many lives, but only one was the real one. In the darkest period of human history he perpetrated the greatest fraud of the Second World War, deceiving the German High Command into believing that the Normandy landings were a diversion and that the real invasion would take place in the Pas de Calais. An agricultural entrepreneur, then a hotel porter, he had offered his services to the British to help them, but his plan, too naive, had failed. Far from being discouraged, he approached the Germans and managed to convince them that he could act as a spy to further the Nazi cause. To the Nazis his code name was Alaric. To the British he was Garbo. To the rest of the world he was a complete mystery.
