Abstract: Nel 2004 Jean.Marie Teno conosce Ernestine, figlia di Ernest Ouandié, eroe della lotta per l'indipendenza camerunense, mandato a morte dal regime di Ahidjo nel 1971. Ernestine ha lo sguardo fiero, un'eleganza naturale, un volto bellissimo. In uno splendido mattino di luglio, seduta sotto un porticato, la donna decide di raccontare al regista la storia della sua vita. Le sue parole sono semplici e dirette, arrivano dritte al cuore per restarvi a lungo. Abbandonata dalla madre in tenera età, Ernestine viene affidata ad una zia che la tratta come una schiava. Nonostante le privazioni e le umiliazioni subite, la bambina rifiuta di sottomettersi, il che comporta – inutile dirlo – le più dure punizioni. Può la storia di un singolo diventare quella di un intero paese, segnato da decenni di repressioni e lotte sanguinose? Il racconto di Ernestine ci trascina in un mondo in cui l'infanzia è negata e in cui l'ingiustizia sembra destinata a prevalere. “Ho poi appreso che Ernestine aveva scelto di finire la propria vita nel 2009, lasciando i suoi tre figli e il marito. Questa tragica notizia mi ha riportato alle registrazioni del 2004” (J-M. Teno). Il film alterna al racconto in prima persona, preziose immagini d'archivio e bellissimi disegni realizzati da Kemo Samba.
In 2004 Jean.Marie Teno meets Ernestine, daughter of Ernest Ouandié, hero of the fight for Cameroon's independence who was sentenced to death under Ahidjo regime in 1971. Ernestine looks proud, she has a natural elegance and a wonderful face. In a beautiful morning in July, sitting under a porch, the woman decides to tell the director the story of her life. Her words are simple and straightforward, they touch our heart and leave a lasting impression. After being abandoned by her mother in her early childhood, Ernestine is entrusted to the care of an aunt who treats her like a slave. Despite the hardships and humiliations, the girl refuses to submit, which – needless to say – causes her to be hardly punished. Can the story of an individual become the symbol of the entire country, marked by decades of repression and bloody conflicts? Ernestine's story takes us into a world where children are persecuted and where injustice seems to prevail. “I learned that Ernestine had chosen to end her own life in 2009, leaving her three children and husband behind. This tragic news took me back to the 2004 recordings” (J-M. Teno). The film alternates between the story in the first person, valuable footage and wonderful drawings by Kemo Samba.
