Abstract: Un treno in corsa, le chiacchiere allegre di due giovani in viaggio, la foresta fuori dal finestrino: Bara, la giovane figlia di emigrati cechi in Canada alla ricerca delle proprie radici e Honza, un musicista in vena d’avventura, compiono insieme un lungo viaggio attraverso le foreste boeme. All’America dei grandi territori incontaminati, degli ideali di libertŕ e dei grandi racconti sul girovagare senza meta, i cechi hanno guardato come a una patria ideale, una terra d’utopia da rincorrere e ricostruire nelle proprie foreste. Di questa epica d’importazione e del popolo che l’ha vissuta, entrambi in via d’estinzione, Jan Foukal – teatrante e musicista oltre che filmmaker, appassionato del “tramping” e del genere trasversale on the road – sceglie di costruire un ritratto che sia al contempo riflessione e racconto. Scrive e mette in immagini la forma svuotata di un road movie classicamente inteso, rispettandone ambientazione, assortimento dei personaggi, diagramma del ritmo e delle azioni del racconto; versandoci dentro perň un secondo e forse addirittura un terzo film. Ne vien fuori un documentario che da una parte racconta il vagabondo e il suo vagabondare - con la relativa retorica, i riti e i simboli magico-sentimentali - e dall’altra ricostruisce il suo speciale modo di mettersi in scena e di rappresentarsi, d’intendere il viaggio elevandolo quasi a condizione esistenziale.(s.g.)
A running train, two young travelers chatting cheerfully, the forest outside the window: Bara, the young daughter of Czech immigrants in Canada looking for her origins, and Honza, a musician looking for adventure, take a long journey together through the Bohemian forests. The America of large wild regions, of the ideals of freedom and of great stories of aimless wandering had been seen by the Czechs as an ideal fatherland, as a utopian land to pursue and to rebuild in their forests. This imported epic and the people who experienced it – now on the verge of extinction – are portrayed by Jan Foukal – actor and musician, as well as filmmaker and lover of tramping and of the on-the-road genre – in this film which combines reflection and storytelling. The structure and the images are typical of a classic road movie: the scenery, the selection of characters, the pace of the story. However, Jan Foukal adds to the external form of the classic road movie a second and maybe even a third film. The result is a documentary which, on the one hand, tells the story of a tramp and of his wanderings – with its rhetoric, rituals and magic-sentimental symbols – and which, on the other hand, reconstructs his special way of representing himself as he sees the act of travelling almost as an existential condition.(s.g.)
