Abstract: Els Dietvorst si trasferisce dal Belgio in un villaggio della più sperduta Irlanda rurale. Affascinata dalla routine dura e verace dei pastori e dei contadini che abitano questa terra, l’artista filmmaker produce un documentario per il web. Da una sezione di questo primo film nasce The Rabbit and the Teasel, tentativo di ritrovare una concretezza materiale ai racconti memoriali di TJ Butler, il più giovane discendente di una dinastia di allevatori legati per generazioni alla terra e agli animali. Le parole dei suoi racconti sono l’origine potente che genera le immagini: la sua testimonianza, adattata e riscritta, viene incarnata da una intensa voce narrante la quale a sua volta sembra innescare e plasmare le immagini che Els gira dirigendo abitanti del luogo. In questo modo si costruisce un dramma materico e carnale che tiene il pensiero e le pratiche del documentario nella pancia e sulla superficie epidermica dell’immagine, e che ricompone i materiali frutto di una lunga e appassionata ricerca in un organismo narrativo irrorato dal sangue e dalle lacrime.(s.g.)
Els Dietvorst moves from Belgium to a village in the remotest rural part of Ireland. The artist and film-maker falls in love with the harsh and authentic daily life of the shepherds and farmers who live in this land, therefore she decides to produce a web documentary about them. From a section of this first film, she developed The Rabbit and The Teasel, an attempt at finding an objective, material correlative for T.J. Butler’s memoirs. Butler is the youngest descendant of a dynasty of breeders historically bound to the land and cattle. The words in his short stories are the powerful source of the images: his testimonies are adapted and rewritten, and then given life by an intense voice-over which in turn seems to trigger and shape the images shot by Els, directing the inhabitants. She constructs a materic and physical drama where the thought and practices of documentary film-making are both hidden in the belly and exposed on the surface of the image putting together materials from a long, impassioned research conducted in a narrative organism bathed by blood and teardrops.(s.g.)
