Abstract: Andres torna a Cuba dopo due mesi trascorsi in Germania. Ha con sé una videocamera nuova e un progetto: filmare la vita degli abitanti di Marianao, sobborgo popolare dell'Avana. Le sue motivazioni sono chiare e precise: filmare il quartiere "perché ne vale la pena... e perché nessun altro lo fa". Dal 2008 al 2014 il cineasta dilettante si impegna con passione in questa "attività di documentazione" di cui Somos Cuba presenta una selezione, operata da Annett Ilijew sui materiali filmati nel corso degli anni e inviati in Europa clandestinamente. L'occhio di Andres, tenacemente puntato su familiari ed amici, raramente si allontana dalla soglia di casa, luogo di incontro di un'umanità soffocata dall'indigenza ed umiliata dall'assenza prolungata dello Stato e delle sue istituzioni. In questo microcosmo, vivace ma dolente, dove la propaganda cantilena slogan trionfalistici e l'alcool ottenebra la mente, la piccola Leydis, figlia di Andres e di Cuba stessa, cresce e, giorno dopo giorno, prende coscienza di sé. Nei sogni e nelle osservazioni della bambina si ripercuotono le tante contraddizioni di un mondo in bilico, un incubo urbano che si nutre di innocenza.(a.l.)
Andres goes back to Cuba after spending two months in Germany. He brings with him a new camera and a project: filming the life of people in Marianao, a suburb in La Habana. His motivations are very clear and defined: filming this neighbourhood “because it is worth it… and because nobody else does”. From 2008 to 2014, the amateur film-maker committed with passion in this “documentary actvity”, of which Somos Cuba is a selection, by Annett Ilijew, on the materials filmed throughout the years and then smuggled to Europe. Andres’ eye is continuously set on his family and friends and it rarely goes away from home, a meeting point of a humanity strangled by poverty and humiliated by the continuous absence of the State and its institutions. In this lively, yet painful, micro-world, where propaganda sings triumphant slogans and alcohool clouds minds over, the little Leydis, daughter to Andres and Cuba itself, grows up and, day after day, becomes aware of herself. The dreams and the remarks of the girl expose the contradictions of an insecure world, a urban nightmare feeding on innocence.(a.l.)
