Abstract: Ottobre 2014: Seyyed Ahmad attraversa in auto una landa desertica segnata da trincee e nascondigli nella sabbia. Da ogni angolo i guerrieri spuntano fuori per salutare il loro comandante, il loro leader. Siamo a Jorf al-Sakhar, a 60 km a sud di Baghdad, e Seyyed Ahmad è a capo di un reggimento di volontari che hanno abbandonato lavoro e famiglia per combattere l'avanzata di DA'ESH(ISIS). È un esercito formato da gente comune e tutto, dall'equipaggiamento al cibo, dalle uniformi alle armi, viene procurato grazie alle donazioni di privati cittadini. Prima di pianificare una nuova azione bisogna contrattare il prezzo delle munizioni con i fornitori di armi. Majed Neisi - documentarista di guerra - si è unito al gruppo per filmarne le giornate e le azioni di combattimento. Piano piano è riuscito a farsi accettare da questi uomini che non sono nati per combattere ma che sono pronti a morire per difendere la propria terra. Il giorno della battaglia il regista si unisce ad un gruppo di sminatori che - sotto il tiro del nemico - deve aprire la strada verso l'avamposto da cui l'ISIS sferra i suoi attacchi. Il film è la cronaca di questa azione eroica che, probabilmente, resterà un episodio tra i tanti di un conflitto di cui è difficile delimitare i confini.(a.l.)
October 2014: Seyyed Ahmad drives though a desert wasteland creased with trenches and ditches dug in the sand. Warriors suddenly appear from everywhere to hail their commander and leader. We are in Jorf al-Sakhar, 60 km south of Baghdad. Seyyed Ahmad commands a regiment of volunteers who left their job and family to fight against the advance of DA’ESH (ISIS, or ISIL). It is an army made of ordinary people. Everything, from equipment to food, uniforms to weapons, is provided thanks to donations of private citizens. Before planning any new action, you need to negotiate the price of ammunitions with the arms dealers. Majed Neisi, the author of this war documentary, joined the group to film and record their daily life and actions of fight. He slowly managed to be accepted by these men, who weren’t born to fight but are ready to die to defend their land. On the day of the battle, the film-maker joins a group of sappers who – under the enemy’s fire – are supposed to open a passage towards the outpost from where an IS group launch their attacks. The film chronicles this heroic action, probably just an episode of the many others that characterize a conflict whose boundaries are very difficult to discern.(a.l.)
