Abstract: Pensate di arrivare in un Paese quando a malapena sapete camminare e non ancora parlare, di trascorrerci i seguenti 18 anni con la vostra famiglia, farvi degli amici, progettare un futuro. Poi, alla prima occasione venite sbattuti fuori da quel Paese senza possibilità di appello. Pensate di essere catapultati in un villaggio africano isolato che non conoscete e che vi accoglie con sospetto. Questo film è innanzitutto una lotta tra Koumba e il regista, tra Koumba e l’ambiente che la circonda, tra Koumba e tutta la sua vita, tra Koumba e la sua personalità costretta a cambiare. Ma è proprio la lotta ciò che tiene Koumba aggrappata alla vita. Tra le pieghe di una normale procedura di rimpatrio, si nasconde una storia epica come un’Odissea contemporanea. Koumba è l’incarnazione della migrante transnazionale, vera protagonista della globalizzazione e sospesa tra due mondi che non la riconoscono a pieno e che si esprimono in un dubbio: siamo noi stessi o il Dio serpente a costruire la trama del nostro destino?(v.i.)
st imagine you arrive to a country when you barely can walk and cannot yet speak. You spend in this country the following eighteen years with your family, you make friends, you plan your future. Then, as the opportunity presents itself, you’re thrown outright out of that country. Imagine you’re catapulted into a remote African village that you’ve never known, and you’re treated with suspicion. This is the story of Koumba, a rebellious girl, who is obliged to go back from France to Senegal, where she’s called “white Koumba.” The only one who stands by her during this ordeal is the film-maker Damien Froidevaux. This film tells first and foremost the fight between Koumba and the film-maker, Koumba and her milieu, Koumba and her life, Koumba and her personality that has to come to terms with reality. But fighting is exactly what keeps Koumba alive. Between the folds of a standard return procedure lies a story as epic as a contemporary Odyssey. Koumba is the reincarnation of the transnational migrant, the true protagonist of globalization, suspended between two worlds that fail to recognize her. You have to wonder, are we or the Serpent God who construct the plot of our destiny?(v.i.)
