Abstract: Costruita su una serie di ripide colline, che separano i quartieri borghesi, più vicini al mare, dalle periferie popolari, perdute sulle sommità dei rilievi, Valparaiso è teatro di un’umanità che si misura con la fatica e la febbre di vivere. Joris Ivens la filma così quando, nel 1962, desideroso di allargare i confini della sua militanza politica di cineasta, accetta un invito di Salvador Allende ad insegnare cinema all’Università di Santiago del Cile e decide di girare con i suoi studenti un film su quella città portuale. Il risultato è uno sguardo disincantato sulla verticalità di Valparaiso percorsa da scalinate, funicolari e ascensori, sulle sue divisioni sociali, sulle difficoltà di portare acqua lungo i pendii fino ai quartieri operai. Percorso da un commento pungente di Chris Marker, "...A Valparaiso" mostra la routine della quotidianità, solcata dalla bizzarra presenza di foche, pinguini e pellicani, ma anche l’eccitazione di una rissa da bar, la meraviglia di uno spettacolo di fuochi artificiali, la gioia di una gara di aquiloni. Il film segna il momento della raggiunta maturità stilistica di Ivens, fatta di coscienza sociale, esplorazione di un territorio e sguardo poetico sulle cose del mondo.
Built on a series of steep hills dividing the bourgeois neighbourhoods near the sea from the working-class areas in the outskirts, in this case high up on the hilltops, the port city of Valparaiso is a theatre for human toil, hardship and the feverish will to live despite everything. This is how Joris Ivens filmed it in 1962, when, anxious to broaden his experience as a politically active film-maker, he accepted an invitation from Salvador Allende to teach cinema at the University of Santiago in Chile. While he was there he made a film about Valparaiso with his students. The result is a disenchanted view of the verticality of the city, with its endless flights of steps, funicular railways and elevators, of its social divisions, of the difficulties of getting water along the slopes to the working class neighbourhoods. Accompanied by a biting commentary by Chris Marker, "…A Valparaiso" depicts the routine of daily life, marked by the bizarre presence of seals, penguins and pelicans, but also the excitement of a bar brawl, the amazed delight of a spectacular firework display and the pleasure of a kite-flying competition. With this film, Ivens achieved full artistic maturity, blending together social conscience, exploration of an area and a poetic gaze on what goes on in the world.
