Abstract: Nel 1977 “Le Camion” rappresenta la Francia al Festival di Cannes, sfidando i limiti del cinema. Una scrittrice – Marguerite Duras – un attore – Gerard Dépardieu –, un tavolo e il copione di un film. Un film che racconta di una donna di mezza età che, con una valigia, fa l’autostop. Trova un passaggio su un camion e si mette a parlare: di un nipote appena nato che deve andare a trovare, di politica e della sua delusione verso il Partito Comunista che ha tradito il proletariato. Nella vana ricerca di qualcuno che interpretasse il ruolo della donna nel film al fianco di Depardieu, M. Duras decide di mettere se stessa davanti alla macchina da presa, ma non nei panni della protagonista. “Racconto ciò che il film sarebbe stato se fosse stato girato”, dice Duras. “Le Camion non riposa unicamente sulla parola, c’è qualcuno che legge, qualcuno che ascolta. Il camion su una strada è un’immagine, è immagine. Non avrebbe potuto essere teatro, Le Camion non è recitato, è letto, e non è stato provato. Se lo fosse stato, sarebbe venuto fuori un altro film” (M. Duras).
In 1977, Le Camion represented France at the Cannes Film Festival and challenged the boundaries of film. Ingredients were a novelist, Marguerite Duras, an actor, Gérard Depardieu, a desk, and a film script. The plot was about a middle-aged woman who carries a suitcase and hitchhikes. A truck driver gives her a lift. She begins to talk about a newborn grandson that she must see, about politics, and her disillusionment with the Communist Party that has betrayed the working class. Having searched in vain for someone who could play the role of the woman alongside Depardieu, Duras decided to put herself in front of the camera. But not as a protagonist. “I describe what the film could have been if it had been filmed”, says Duras. “Le Camion does not rely uniquely on speech. Some read, some listen. The lorry on a road is an image. It is image. It could not have been theatre. There is no acting in Le Camion. It is read. It has not been rehearsed. If it had been, then it would be a different film” (M. Duras).
