Abstract: “Sono un uomo della memoria. Per me la memoria è sempre di attualità.” Così Richard Dindo si presenta e aveva presentato il suo film sul massacro di Chatila. Partendo da un testo Jean Genet (“Un captif amoureux”), l’instancabile film maker-viaggiatore si reca a Chatila nel 1999 e scandaglia nel presente le tracce del passato. Lo accompagna una giovane attrice, Mounia Raoui, che legge il testo di Genet. L’elemento finzionale e la forza irruenta della realtà che emerge, nonostante poco o nulla sia visibile, formano un viluppo inestricabile che dà fascino e vigore al film. Appassionato elogio di un popolo, quello palestinese, e accusa ad un governo, quello israeliano, che ha intenzionalmente organizzato e messo in atto un massacro contro civili, "Genet à Chatila"è un film di grande forza politica, esemplare per come rende il passato presente. “Io mi sono sempre confrontato, nel mio cinema, come in tutti i documentari che lavorano sul passato con l’assenza del personaggio. Io sono di fronte all’assenza, di fronte a ciò che non si può più mostrare. Sono di fronte al vuoto, perché la memoria non si può più mostrare con le immagini” (Richard Dindo).
“I am a man of memory. To me, memory is always topical.” This is how Richard Dindo introduces himself and how he presented his film on the Chatila massacre. Following a text by Jean Genet (“Un captif amoureux”), the untiring travelling filmmaker visits Chatila in 1999 and investigates the present in order to trace the past. Travelling with him in his journey the young actress Mounia Raoui reads Genet’s text. Fiction and the abrupt power of the emerging reality, although little is visible, get entangled in an inextricable thread making the film fascinating and vigorous at the same time. A passionate praise of the Palestinian people and a prosecution of the Israeli government, who intentionally disposed a massacre of civilians, "Genet à Chatila" is a powerful political movie, exemplary in its actualization of the past. “I’ve always dealt with the absence of the character in my movies, as do all documentaries working with the past. I face the absence, I face what cannot be shown anymore. I face the void because memory cannot be displayed through images” (Richard Dindo).
