Abstract: Una mattina del 1964, Dave Lambert arriva in taxi agli RCA Studios per un’audizione del suo nuovo quintetto, il Lambert, Hendricks and Ross. La cinepresa di Pennebaker si muove con fluida libertà all’interno della sala di registrazione, osserva i musicisti e i cantanti all’opera, cattura gesti, volti, sguardi, filma la musica e il flusso di emozioni che anima il gruppo. Di lì a poco la RCA annullò il progetto e cancellò tutti i nastri, Dave Lambert morì in un incidente stradale, e questo film è tutto ciò che resta. “Tutto quello che era rimasto era questo film di quindici minuti con qualche prova incompleta di canzoni che altrimenti non sarebbero esistite. Mi venne in mente che questo è proprio quanto i film dovrebbero fare, che io avrei dovuto fare: registrare persone e musica in una specie di storia popolare che altrimenti non sarebbe esistita. Fu solamente alcune settimane dopo che Albert Grossman entrò nel nostro ufficio e mi chiese se ero interessato a fare un film su un suo cliente, Bob Dylan” (D A Pennebaker).
One morning in 1964 Dave Lambert arrives by taxi at RCA Studios to rehearse with his new quintet, Lambert, Hendricks and Ross. Pennebaker’s camerawork weaves fluidly inside the recording studio, observing musicians and opera singers, capturing gestures, faces, glances, filming the music and emotional flow that animates the group. Shortly thereafter, RCA stopped the project and canceled the tapes, Dave Lambert died in a car accident, and the film is all that remains. (a.l.) “All there was was this fifteen-minute film of a few incomplete rehearsals of songs that otherwise didn’t exist. It hit me that this was really what film should be doing, what I should be doing: recording people and music as a kind of popular history that might otherwise not exist. It was only a few weeks later that Albert Grossman walked into our office and asked if I was interested in making a film about his client, Bob Dylan” (D A Pennebaker).
