Abstract: “Non puoi immaginarlo, devi starci” dice Marcus del carcere.

“You cannot imagine it, you have to stay there,” says Marcus from jail. Sentenced for receiving stolen goods, counterfeiting, breaking and entering, and so on, he not only knows the place but also and reluctantly makes it the ultimate reason of his existence. Marcus helps runaways. He doesn’t feel guilty about this. His is a calling. It is the only solution to a place that, far from extinguishing your crimes, condemns them to putrescence. In Le Dictionnaire, Marcus promotes the story-time with narrative levels that have to do with a patient listening of his past, treated as a landscape. “The only thing to do was to film, without even understanding, letting myself go to the fulfilment of inspiration as if I was playing jazz. This was kindled by his words and the places that he would show me. I had to trust my senses, and forget my inexperience with the camera. I had to become the eyes of his words.” [M. Jiménez] Once out of jail, Marcus names the world by reading it on a dictionary. But words – like laws – are only apparently established once and for all. You have to look out for the senses and stop condemning the world to the prison made by the verdicts of pre-established meanings. Let ‘sympathy’ ‘break out’ from words, the supreme act of human dignity.
