Abstract: Le racchette da neve, quelle che noi ci ostiniamo a chiamare ciaspole, non servono solo a facilitare gli spostamenti nelle distese innevate che coprono il territorio canadese durante l’inverno, ma sono un vero e proprio attrezzo per competizioni sportive. È durante un convegno annuale di «ciaspolatori» che nel 1958 Michel Brault gira le immagini di quello che dovrebbe essere un reportage di quattro minuti per un magazine televisivo. Il film, che, grazie all’uso, per la prima volta, di un suono sincrono e di un obiettivo grandangolare, riprende la gente in mezzo alla folla, mostrando con evidente freschezza i riti, le chiacchiere e il piacere di stare insieme, rischia di non vedere la luce. Il responsabile del magazine non vede niente di interessante nel «girato» e decide di mandare il materiale in archivio. Gilles Groulx decide tuttavia di montarlo nel tempo libero. Nel 1959 Brault lo mostra al Seminario Flaherty in California, davanti a una platea entusiasta in cui siedono cineasti come Jean Rouch e Richard Leacock. Da qui prende il via il Cinema diretto, la cui fondamentale attitudine sarà, secondo Brault, “filmare la vita così com’è”.
Snowshoes, what we insist on calling «webs», are not only used to facilitate moving through the snowy stretches across Canada in the winter, but are also an important apparatus for competition. In 1958, during an annual meeting of «webbers», Michel Brault films what was supposed to be a four minute news report for a television magazine. The film, which for the first time used synchronized sound and a wide-angle lens, demonstrating with evident freshness the rituals, chats, and pleasures of the gathering, almost risked not seeing the light of day. The editor found nothing interesting in the «shots» and decided to send the material to the archives. Nevertheless, Gilles Groulx edited it in his free time. In 1959, Brault screened it at the Flaherty Seminar in California before an enthusiastic audience which included filmmakers Jean Rouch and Richard Leacock. From this was born Direct Cinema whose fundamental stance would become, according to Brault, “to film life as it is”.
