Abstract: Le immagini della giovane star del pop Paul Anka scorrono sullo schermo, mentre il cantante è impegnato in un tour di concerti di grande successo. Brevi sequenze tratte dalle esibizioni dal vivo si alternano ai rituali della macchina mediatica del pop, e alla creazione di un «mito» moderno e da consumare, come l’abbraccio caloroso delle fan o le strategie commerciali del manager, insieme ai momenti di riposo del cantante e ai molti volti della star del pop. La macchina da presa svela i meccanismi simbolici ed economici che accompagnano il fenomeno musicale, e, allo stesso tempo, ne svela i particolari più intimi e nascosti, muovendosi libera davanti e dietro il palcoscenico, prima e dopo i concerti, mescolandosi tra le fan in delirio o seguendo la star dentro i camerini, nei lunghi spostamenti da una città all’altra o nei momenti di pausa dopo uno show. Un film complesso, ritratto di una star, ma anche del mondo che vive attorno a lui; un film che è il risultato di un percorso aperto, senza una narrazione prestabilita, ma capace di “cogliere la vita senza sceneggiatura e senza ricercatezze; di registrare il suono al momento, senza montaggi studiati; di montare il film in modo da creare emozione, il riso e il pianto e, possibilmente, entrambi allo stesso tempo” (W. Konig).
Images of the young pop star Paul Anka glide across the screen, while the singer is busy on his very successful tour. Short scenes of his live shows are spliced with the pop media machine blitz and the creation of a modern, consumer «icon», as he warmly hugs fans and his manager strategizes; with the singer at rest and the many faces of the pop star. The camera reveals the symbolic and economic mechanisms that accompany the musical phenomenon and, at the same time, captures the most intimate and hidden aspects, moving freely in front of and behind the stage, pre and post concert, mingling with delirious fans, following the star into the dressing room and over the long trips from one city to the next, and during the moments of downtime after the show. The film is a complex portrait of a star and the world around him; though its open approach eschews pre-fixed narration, it is capable of “capturing a life without scripts and refinements; of recording the sound moment to moment, without studied edits; to put together the film in such a way as to move one to laugh and cry and, possibly, both at the same time” (W. Konig).
