The nomadic alternative, as Bruce Chatwin used to define it, perfectly describes Nicolas Humbert and Werner Penzel’s work. Two iconoclast travelers, the directors of “Middle of the Moment” explore the core of nomadic life itself, gathered through the collaboration with the poet-clown Robert Lax and the musician Fred Firth. More than a movie on Tuaregs and street artists, and their analogies (tents, deserts and no man’s lands of the suburbs, the faces marked by the toil of the street), “Middle of the Moment” is a visual poem. The most evident peculiarity of the movie resides in the style and editing of images, breaking off with realism and working through free associations of images and abrupt shots. Negating any form of identification and playing on the dialectics of closeness and distance, the movie manages to create a unique and original universe. “Our travels have been more than just a way to approach old and new nomadic practices, but mostly a search for the poetic vocabulary of the movie in all its options of free representation” (Nicolas Humbert, Werner Penzel).
