Abstract: L’immagine come rivelazione, inquadratura dopo inquadratura, di un mondo umano che resiste. Il cinema come svelamento della vita. Nel ritratto di una famiglia rurale peruviana, dedita alla produzione del carbone vegetale, Jiménez e Liénard colgono il movimento di un mondo che mal si adatta alla modernità avanzante e la tempo stesso ne osservano con lucidità la resistenza alle leggi del mercato, ai ritmi e ai tempi del mondo liberale. Costruito come un susseguirsi di sguardi sui gesti e le azioni dei protagonisti, il film crea un’immagine che li contiene e al tempo stesso ne rivela le più intime forme dell’essere, che si palesa negli volti, nelle parole e nelle relazioni dei rappresentanti di tre generazioni. Ponendosi dalla parte dei suoi protagonisti, adottandone la visione del mondo e allo stesso tempo osservandola, “Sobre las brasas” offre dunque un altro sguardo possibile su una realtà spesso sin troppo invisibile: “È un film fatto con grande rispetto dei soggetti, e sono molti i momenti che portano sorrisi, speranza e riflessioni autentiche: il ritmo del film sembra essere modellato su quello della vita di questa famiglia e della produzione di carbone” (D. Charles).
The image as revelation, shot after shot, of a resisting human world. Film as disclosure of life. In this portrayal of a Peruvian country family dedicated to the production of vegetal charcoal, Jiménez and Liénard capture the movement of a world ill-fitted to advancing modernity. At the same time, they lucidly observe their resistance to the laws of the free market, the rhythm and pace of the liberal world. Based on a succession of glances over the gestures and actions made by the protagonists, the film creates an image that holds them, revealing the innermost forms of their being. This transpires through the faces, the words, and the relationships entertained by the members of three generations. Siding with their protagonists, at once adopting and observing their world view, the film-makers offer one more possible gaze onto a reality that is too often invisible. “It is a film made with great respect for the subjects. There are many moments arousing smiles, hope, and authentic reflections: the film pace seems to be shaped on the daily rhythm of this family and the production of coal” (D. Charles).
