Abstract: Ventiquattro ore nella stazione ferroviaria di Waterloo, a Londra. Una sinfonia di passi, volti, sguardi, voci a ritmo di jazz. La maggior parte degli episodi sono interpretati da attori non professionisti dopo un attento lavoro di osservazione dal vero, ma l’autenticità è garantita dalla freschezza dell’ambientazione e dal gusto per l’improvvisazione. Il lavoro inarrestabile di impiegati e ferrovieri, il dramma del bimbo che si è smarrito, il brivido del convoglio speciale per i detenuti, il tocco di «humour» dell’ufficio oggetti smarriti; attese, corse, baci e abbracci all’arrivo del treno, qualche lacrima alla partenza: “Terminus” accosta con eleganza momenti di varia intensità per cogliere le molte anime di questo imponente edificio che, ogni giorno, si popola di vita. “Non volevamo fare un film che mostrasse tecnicamente l’efficienza delle Ferrovie Britanniche o come funziona l’organizzazione, né ci interessavano i fatti o le cifre. Volevamo catturare le emozioni umane che, all’interno della stazione, vengono espresse con tanta abbondanza. Ho passato almeno un mese andando in giro per Waterloo a studiare le reazioni umane a tutto quello che accadeva” (J. Schlesinger).
Twenty-four hours in the Waterloo train station in London. A symphony of footsteps, faces, expressions and voices in the rhythm of jazz. Most of the episodes are cast with amateur actors after a careful study of the reality, but the authenticity is achieved by the freshness of the setting and a taste for improvisation. The constant laboring of the employees and railway men, the drama of a lost child, the shudder of the special prisoner convoy, the touch of humor with the lost and found official; the waiting, running, kissing and hugging on the arrival train, a tear upon departure: Terminus elegantly weaves moments of various intensity to capture the various lives of this imposing building that, every day, fills up with life. “We did not want to make a film technically showing how efficient British Railways are, or how the organization worked, we were not interests in facts or figures, but wanted to capture the human emotions that are abundantly expressed inside the station. I spent at least a month simply walking round Waterloo studying human reaction to what was going on” (J. Schlesinger).
