Abstract: “Se un individuo prende il rischio di mettersi nel mezzo di una guerra per comunicare al resto del mondo che cosa sta accadendo, in un certo senso questo individuo sta cercando di negoziare per la pace. Questa è la ragione per cui le persone che fanno la guerra non vogliono fotografi intorno”. Le parole del grande reporter James Nachtway risuonano ancora oggi in tutta la loro forza. “War Photographer”, film di Christian Frei candidato all’Oscar e premiato in numerosi festival, più che di guerra parla però di immagini. Come si individua, si costruisce e si confeziona un’immagine? E quale rapporto sussiste tra il dito che scatta e l’immagine colta? Christian Frei ha seguito Nachtway per molto tempo: ha condiviso situazioni difficili, ha raccolto testimonianze di giornalisti con cui il fotografo ha lavorato, ha persino posizionato una piccola videocamera sopra la sua fotocamera. Il film si offre come una attuale radiografia del mondo globalizzato. Tanto che spesso la sfida per il fotografo (come per il filmmaker) non è quella di essere sul posto al momento giusto, ma di trovare un posto tra le tante contraddizioni che abitano il presente.
“In a way, if and individual assumes the risk of placing himself in the middle of a war to communicate to the rest of the world what’s happening, he’s trying to negotiate for peace. Perhaps that’s the reason for those in charge of perpetuating the war do not like to have photographers around.” The great reporter James Nachtway’s words are still resonating with all their vigour. Christian Frei’s “War Photographer”, nominated for an Oscar and awarded several prizes in more than one festival, is a movie about images, rather than war. How is an image selected, constructed and displayed? And what is the relation between the shooting subject and the captured image? Christian Frei followed Nachtway for a long time: he shared difficult experiences with him, gathered testimonies from journalists who worked with the photographer, he even placed a small MC on the photographer’s camera. The documentary presents itself as an x-ray of the globalized world. To the point that often the biggest challenge for the photographer (as well as for the filmmaker) does not lie in being in a place at the right time, but rather in finding a place amongst the many contradictions lying in the present.
