After having explored the northernmost lands hunting for polar lights, Peter Mettler moved to Indonesia, still looking to expand his reflection about film realism and the so-called magic of film. The shootings took place between 1990 and 1992, but Mettler also employed unused film stock and several film leaders. The footage was reversed in video and later retransformed in film. Mettler’s gaze wanders in search of elements and epiphanies, reminding Stan Brakhage’s practice in some way. Improvisation becomes more significant, and the freedom with which Mettler now employs a variety of registers allows the film, on one hand, to echo his earlier works, and on the other hand to indicate his growing autonomy from the medium. What really matters to him is restore the unity of a place by means of faces, gestures, sounds, and images. It is a spiritual, rather than cinematic or intellectual, connection, evoked by Mettler once again as if it were a musical process experienced through discovery and revelation.
