Abstract: Beirut, anni ‘80, gli anni della guerra. Lina, adolescente, alter ego della regista, affronta le prime esperienze della vita adulta, osservando ancora dal limitare dell’infanzia il mondo che le si muove intorno: i pranzi in famiglia funestati dalle liti tra parenti, i pomeriggi seduti su un muretto, passati a spiare i giovani del quartiere, le ore felici consumate voracemente accanto alla serva della zia, smaliziata e avventurosa donna in erba; il sesso, la guerra, l’odio e la paura, l’amore incerto, la vita e la morte. Nel suo primo lungometraggio a soggetto, Danielle Arbid ricostruisce una cronaca familiare ampiamente autobiografica che tuttavia trasfigura l’autoritratto in un romanzo di formazione: il Libano della guerra civile diventa così lo sfondo dentro lo sguardo limpido di una giovane che ordina il suo orizzonte secondo due gerarchie parallele. Come in una partitura visiva che disegna il diagramma del racconto, l’intensità dei gesti – dalle mani agitate ai baci, dagli schiaffi alle carezze – si affianca e sovrappone alla variazione cromatica della luce producendo infine la superiore armonia dell’emozione.
Beirut, 1980’s, the years of the war. Lina, a teenager and the film director’s alter ego, tackles the first experiences of adult age, observing the world around her from the edge of childhood: family meals plagued by fights between parents, afternoons spent sitting at the usual hangout, spying on the boys of the neighbourhood, happy hours hungrily consumed near her aunt’s servant, an adventurous burgeoning woman who already knows a thing or two; sex, war, hate and fear, uncertain love, life and death. In her debut feature film, Danielle Arbid reconstructs a vastly autobiographical family chronicle that transfigures the self-portrait into a coming-of-age novel. The Lebanon afflicted by civil war becomes the background of the clear gaze of a young person who orders her horizon in two parallel hierarchies. As in a visual composition drawing the diagram of the story, the intensity of the gestures – from the fidgeting hands to the kisses, from slaps to caresses – contributes to and overlaps with the chromatic variation of light, producing at last the higher harmony of emotion.
