Abstract: Venuto letteralmente alla luce in condizioni a dir poco avventurose, questo film rappresenta al momento la summa delle ambizioni e dei risultati artistici ottenuti nel campo del cinema da Peter Mettler. Il film, ottenuto da oltre 50 ore di materiale, attraversa territori diversissimi tra loro come la Svizzera e l’India, il Canada e gli Stati Uniti. In un certo senso il film può essere considerato il «sulla strada» di Peter Mettler nel quale il suo approccio profondamente nomade si definisce anche in quanto discorso cinematografico. La pluralità dei piani del linguaggio diventa il territorio nel quale il suo sguardo si muove instancabile alla ricerca di forme di vita con le quali entrare in contatto. Da Albert Hoffman, lo scienziato che ha sintetizzato l’LSD, al proprietario di un sex shop fetish, passando per il gioco d’azzardo a Las Vegas e l’India, Mettler mette in scena molteplici piani del reale che si offrono più come ulteriori interrogativi che alla stregua di risposte. “Molte cose accadono semplicemente come realtà di fatto – per caso. È questo che mi piace: accade tutto troppo in fretta perché la parte razionale del cervello sia in grado di farci i conti sino in fondo”.
This film literally came to light adventurously, and to date it constitutes the summa of Mettler’s ambitions and artistic achievements in the field of cinema. More than 50 hours of footage span across extremely different territories such as Switzerland and India, Canada and the US. In some way “Gambling, God and LSD” can also be considered Mettler’s “On the Road”, where his deeply nomadic approach becomes more defined also in terms of film strategy. The plurality of language levels becomes the territory where his gaze wanders untiringly, looking for forms of life with whom to establish contact. From Albert Hoffman, the scientist who invented LSD, to the owner of a fetish sex shop, passing through gambling in Las Vegas and then India, Mettler offers multiple levels of reality that are posited more as further questions than as answers. “Many things simply happen as a matter of fact – haphazardly. That’s what I like: everything happens too quickly for the rational part of your brain to be able to fully account for it.”
