Abstract: Un uomo e una donna si svegliano nel cuore della notte. La donna è angosciata dai suoi incubi. Entrambi sono ossessionati dai loro fantasmi. Lei non si capacita dell’intangibilità della sua mente, al contrario del suo corpo, che avverte come pesante e pieno di limiti. L’uomo, invece, le racconta una storia che lo tormenta sin da quando era ancora bambino. Quando i suoi genitori gli impedivano di uscire a giocare con gli amichetti del quartiere, lui permetteva alla mente di abbandonare il suo corpo per sfuggire alle imposizioni della sua famiglia. Intorno a questa cornice narrativa si succedono una serie di elementi che apparentemente si svolgono nella testa dell’uomo e approfondiscono il tema della scissione tra mente e corpo. Un incontro con un epilettico, una prostituta e uno psicanalista demente sono i momenti chiave di un delirio psicotico sempre più intenso e apparentemente del tutto fuori controllo. Film realizzato allo Ryerson Polytechnical Institute, mette in luce la sempre maggiore autonomia tecnica e formale di Mettler che sperimenta con numerose tecniche nuove. Realizzato nel corso del terzo anno di studi, il film anticipa motivi che saranno sviluppati con maggiore consapevolezza in “Scissere”.
A man and a woman are woken up in the middle of the night. The woman is prey of her nightmares. Both are haunted by their own ghosts. She cannot make sense of her mind’s intangibility, whereas her body is perceived as weighty and clumsy. The man tells her a story that has been tormenting him since he was a child. When his parents forbade him to go and play with his little friends, he would let his mind leave his body and escape his family’s impositions. Against this narrative framework we see a series of elements that are seemingly happening in the man’s mind and explore the notion of separation of body and mind. Meetings with an epileptic, a prostitute, and a demented psycho-analyst are the key moments of an ever more intense psychotic delirium that apparently goes out of control. A film realised at the Ryerson Polytechnical Institute, it shows Mettler’s growing formal and technical autonomy while he experiments with numerous new techniques. It was made during the third year of school and anticipates motifs to be developed with more awareness in Scissere.
