Abstract: Cortometraggio realizzato quando il regista frequentava la scuola di cinema. Un ritratto forte e appassionato del suo amico Kevin Jamieson, che Mettler aveva perso di vista dai tempi dell’adolescenza. Lo ritrova sei anni dopo completamente cambiato. Kevin, ossia Lancalot, è diventato uno spacciatore di droga che vive ai margini della società nonostante (o forse a causa) delle sue origini altoborghesi. Considerato da alcuni critici dell’opera mettleriana come l’”alter ego” del regista, Kevin/Lancalot rappresenta forse il primo tentativo di indagare compiutamente un’area della percezione e della coscienza comunemente ritenuta inaccessibile o refrattaria all’immagine. “Quando ho mostrato il film al mio insegnante, R. Bruce Elder, lui si è molto arrabbiato e inquietato. Non riusciva a capire perché avessi voluto realizzare un film incentrato su una persona come Kevin”. Nel tentativo di ottenere il maggior grado di oggettività possibile, Mettler affida addirittura la macchina da presa all’amico nel corso delle sue peregrinazioni notturne. Nella sua irruenza giovanile, “Lancalot Freely” esprime bene sia il tasso di novità introdotto da Mettler nel cinema sperimentale e documentario canadese che il rifiuto delle convenzioni vigenti in questi mondi.
A short made when its author still was at film school. A powerful and impassioned portrait of his friend Kevin Jamieson, whom he had lost touch with since adolescence. He met him again six years later, and found him totally changed. Kevin, a.k.a. Lancalot, has become a pusher who lives at the margins of society even though – or because – he is from bourgeois origins. Kevin/ Lancalot is considered by Mettler experts as the filmmaker’s alter-ego, and the movie as the first attempt to explore thoroughly an area of perception and of conscience that is commonly considered either inaccessible or refractory to pictures. “When I showed "Lancalot" to my instructor, Bruce Elder, he got very angry and troubled. He couldn’t figure out why I would want to make a film about such a person as Kevin.” Pursuing as much objectivity as possible, Mettler even gave his friend his camera to film his night wanderings. With its youthful energy, "Lancalot Freely" indicates the rate of novelty introduced by Mettler in Canadian experimental and documentary cinema, and takes a stand against the conventions ruling in both worlds.
