Abstract: Nel 1953 l’Olanda venne sommersa dall’acqua. Un violento nubifragio inondò l’8% del territorio nazionale. Niente in confronto a quello che accadde nel 2070, quando si ruppero gli argini e l’acqua del mare si mescolò alla pioggia, coprendo campi coltivati e città cementificate. Uno dei pochi sopravvissuti racconta questa tragedia nei minimi particolari: un’apocalisse fatta di acqua e fango. Questo film si svolge qui e ora, ma anche in un altro quando e in un altro dove, sospesi in un tempo possibile e in un futuro già scritto. Vediamo gli occhi della tragedia adesso - “Before the Flood” - ma anche le conseguenze dell’inondazione. Tra scientifico e fantascientifico, de Putter realizza un magistrale esempio di documentario sul futuro, basato sulle condizioni del presente e la ricostruzione delle tracce del passato. La strenua resistenza dell’uomo alle forze della natura viene raccontata da scrittori, scienziati, religiosi e da un ricco archivio di immagini, tra cui spiccano quelle realizzate da Bert Haanstra e Joris Ivens. “Se il tempo per voi rappresenta qualcosa / fareste meglio ad incominciare a nuotare o affonderete come pietre / Perché i tempi stanno cambiando” [Bob Dylan].
In 1953, the Netherlands was submerged by water. A violent rainstorm flooded 8% of the nation’s soil. Nothing, compared to what happened in 2070, when the embankments broke and sea water combined with rain, covering farmed land and overbuilt cities. One of the few survivors describes this tragedy in the tiniest details: an apocalypse of water and mud. This film is set here and now, but also elsewhere and “elsewhen”, suspended in a possible time and in an already written future. We see the tragedy now, before the flood, as well as the consequences of the flood itself. Between science and science fiction, de Putter has realised a masterful specimen of documentary on the future, based on the conditions of the present and reconstruction of the past. Man’s strenuous resistance to the forces of nature is depicted by writers, scientists, and priests, accompanied by a wealthy archive of pictures. Among them, special notice should be taken of those realised by Bert Haanstra and Joris Ivens. And yet: “If your time to you Is worth savin’ Then you better start swimmin’ Or you’ll sink like a stone For the times they are a-changin” [Bob Dylan].
