Abstract: In cinquant’anni di attività musicale, Bob Dylan ha sempre eluso critici e fans, evitando ogni tentativo di farsi rinchiudere in qualsiasi riserva o categoria. Dylan è un mistero, perché è un’artista che dialoga con il mistero. Nello spazio prodotto da questo dialogo si inseriscono molte esistenze, semplici ma imprevedibili. How Many Roads è un viaggio in 11 tappe negli Stati Uniti; 11 storie di vite toccate, influenzate e sconvolte dalle parole messe in musica da Dylan. Persone normali, differenti per età, religione, estrazione sociale, opinioni, scelte di vita. Ognuno percorre una strada diversa e ognuno, su questa strada, ha incontrato, simile ad una rivelazione, la canzone di Dylan che è diventata “la sua”. Il paesaggio americano si confonde con quello poetico composto da canzoni genuinamente popolari, perché capaci di parlare a tutti e a ciascuno. Un paesaggio che de Putter attraversa con sguardo umile e appassionato. Il risultato è un colorato “road movie” che assomiglia ad una “greatest hits compilation”, in cui ogni esistenza è parte di un mosaico fatto di energie e vitalità, aspirazioni e sofferenze, sogni e incubi.
In over forty years of musical activity, Bob Dylan has always escaped the attempts of critics and fans to cage him in some kind of category. Dylan is a mystery because he is an artist who has a dialogue with mystery. Within the space created by this dialogue many simple but unpredictable existences can be found. How Many Roads is a journey including 11 stopovers across the United States. They correspond to 11 stories, 11 lives of ordinary people touched, influenced, and swept away by the words and the music of Bob Dylan. They are of various ages, religions, social belongings, convictions, and life choices. Everyone follows a different path. Everyone encounters a Damascene revelation in the form of a song by Dylan. The American landscape blends into a landscape of poetry, made up of genuine folk songs because these tunes address each and every one. Jos de Putter goes across this landscape with a humble yet impassioned gaze. The result is a colourful road movie reminiscent of a compilation, where every existence is one piece of the mosaic along with energy and vitality, aspirations and sorrows, dreams and nightmares.
