Abstract: Un ordigno capace di scatenare un’esplosione da 21 kilotoni non è fatto per distruggere obiettivi specifici ma per cancellare ogni forma di vita precedente e condizionare per sempre quella che riesce a resistere. La mattina del 9 Agosto 1945 un mostro di cinque tonnellate pieno di plutonio soprannominato “Fat Man” viene sganciato su Nagasaki, devastandola totalmente. Non vengono polverizzate soltanto le case ma anche le esistenze, le memorie, il tempo. 50 anni dopo, Kyushiro Kusakabe si mette in viaggio con sua cognata alla volta di Nagasaki per recuperare qualche scampolo di memoria interrotta quel giorno maledetto. Un viaggio che è anche un modo per incontrare storie nascoste. E così da Tokyo a Nagasaki ci si imbatte in un vecchio kamikaze in attesa di finire i suoi giorni, un impiegato del comune che cerca invano di ricostruire la mappa dell’area devastata, due sorelle figlie di un sarto di kimono caduto in disgrazia per via della guerra, un fotografo che ha iniziato a scattare nel momento in cui la bomba scatenò la sua potenza. Il risultato è un film cosparso di un velo di particelle minutissime d’umori e sensazioni, un pulviscolo d’atomi come tutto ciò che costituisce l’ultima sostanza della molteplicità delle cose.
A device that can trigger a 21-kiloton explosion is not conceived to destroy specific targets but to annihilate all existing forms of life as well as affect forever those forms that managed to resist. The morning of August 9, 1945, a 5-ton monster charged with plutonium was dropped over Nagasaki. Fat Man – this was its nickname – wiped out the Japanese city. Not only did it pulverize houses, but also existences, memories, and time. 50 years later, Kyushiro Kukasabe and his sister-in-law set off for Nagasaki in order to retrieve a few remnants of memories interrupted that cursed day. The journey resulted in meeting protagonists of hidden stories. Therefore, from Tokyo to Nagasaki, we meet an elderly kamikaze who is waiting for the end of his days, a civil servant who is trying to reconstruct a map of the destroyed area in vain, the two daughters of a kimono tailor who fell into disgrace because of the war, and a photographer who began to take pictures at the very moment when the bomb discharged its power. The result is a film dotted with minute particles of moods and feelings. It is covered with a very fine dust of atoms, like that which makes up the ultimate substance of all things.
