Abstract: Londra, fine anni Cinquanta. I ragazzi del quartiere di Lambeth cercano dei luoghi dove incontrarsi, giocare a cricket, corteggiare le ragazze, organizzare delle serate danzanti o delle gite, discutere animatamente delle cose del mondo. Karel Reisz li riprende così, in quell’energia disordinata che corrisponde al volgere di un’età, quando l’adolescenza è finita e l’età adulta si apprende sul posto di lavoro o nelle occasioni di svago insieme ai propri coetanei. Il regista inglese, che con questo film inaugura, insieme a Lindsay Anderson e a un pugno di altri cineasti, la corta stagione del Free Cinema inglese, vi mette in scena tutti i motivi del suo cinema, gli stessi che si ritroveranno in capolavori quali “Sabato sera, domenica mattina” o “Morgan, matto da legare”: la vitalità delle classi sociali più umili, l’utopia confusa di un domani migliore, la sorridente irriverenza di chi non ha nulla da perdere. Una sequenza del film rivela la forza e la freschezza di questa nuova generazione di registi, quella in cui i ragazzi di Lambeth tornano, a bordo di un pullman, da una partita di cricket. La corriera attraversa il centro di Londra fra urla ai passanti, commenti salaci e allegria di gruppo, emanando un senso di appartenenza al proletariato che oggi non si ritrova più.
Late-Fifties London. The boys from Lambeth look for places to hang out, play cricket, pick up girls, organize dances or getaways, have animated discussions about the things of the world. Karel Reisz films them as they are: with all the messy energy that corresponds with their age, when adolescence ends and adulthood strikes at the workplace or at play with their peers. The English director who with this film ushered in, along with Lindsay Anderson and a handful of other filmmakers, the short season of English Free Cinema, displays all of the motives behind his filmmaking, the same found in masterpieces like “Saturday Night and Sunday Morning” or “Morgan: A Suitable Case for Treatment”: the vitality of the lowest classes, the confused utopia of a better tomorrow, the irreverent smiles of those who have nothing to lose. One of the film’s scenes reveals the power and originality of this new generation of directors. The boys from Lamberh are riding the bus back from a game of cricket and as the bus passes through the center of London, their shouting at pedestrians, salacious comments and mass joy emanate a sense of belonging to a proletariat no longer around today.
