Abstract: Matias ha 7 anni quando ritrova sua madre, Laura, distesa sul pavimento di casa, ansimante e brutalmente ferita in seguito all’ennesimo attacco d’ira del padre. Ma stavolta Laura ha intenzione di voltare pagina e proteggere se stessa e il proprio figlio dalla violenza di suo marito. “Refugiado” è un tentativo di fuga da un dramma famigliare, non priva di ostacoli e ripensamenti. È tutto il tormento di una donna che, come tante vittime di violenza domestica, è subliminalmente legata all’uomo che la aggredisce; ma anche di un figlio strappato all’innocenza dell’infanzia troppo presto per poterne cogliere appieno le ragioni e non desiderare una vita normale, con un padre, una madre e una casa fatta di giochi e di serenità. La camera di Wojciech Staroń ci suggerisce delicatamente la prospettiva di Matias all’interno di questo dramma e, con una luce naturale, carpisce la freschezza di un’età in cui la violenza non è solo quella di un padre che aggredisce una madre, ma anche quella dello svegliarsi tutte le mattine in un luogo diverso, senza le certezze del giorno prima. La sua sensibilità ai dettagli dei volti e dei corpi contribuisce a descrivere i moti d’animo dei protagonisti e a corroborare il legame viscerale che unisce madre e figlio nella fuga verso una vita migliore.
Matias is seven years old when he finds his mother, Laura, lying on the floor, gasping and brutally wounded after the umpteenth fit of rage of his father. This time, though, Laura means to turn the page and protect herself and her son from her husband’s violence. Refugiado is an attempt to escape from a family drama, not without setbacks and second thoughts. There is the torment of a woman who, like several other victims of domestic violence, is subliminally tied to the man who attacks her, but also that of a child torn away from the innocence of childhood too early to be able to understand the reasons, and still desiring a normal life, with a father, a mother, and a home filled with joy and toys. The camera of Wojciech Staroń evokes delicately Matias’ perspective within this tragedy. Under a natural light, it captures the freshness of an age in which violence is not only the one of a father who attacks a mother, but also that of waking up every morning in a different place, without the certainties of the day before. His sensitive approach to the details of faces and bodies contributes to the description of the protagonists’ changing states of mind and the strengthening of the visceral bond between mother and son on their run towards a better life.
