Abstract: Un tossicodipendente (Sandy MacFayden), una giovane madre (Natalie Olanick) e un entomologo (Anthony Downes) intrecciano inconsapevolmente i loro percorsi esistenziali. Per la realizzazione del film, Peter Mettler si è ispirato a Bruno Scissere, un eroinomane conosciuto mentre prestava servizio in una clinica di disintossicazione a Münsterlingen, in Svizzera. “Il suo modo di essere mi affascinava profondamente. Il film però non è un ritratto di Bruno, ma un’emulazione del suo modo di essere gentile e aperto attraverso le possibilità offerte dal cinema”. Alternando colore e bianco e nero, manipolando profondamente le riprese e la fotografia, Mettler si pone in un’area grigia dove lo sperimentalismo e il documentario s’intrecciano inestricabilmente, tentando di attingere a un grado di rivelazione capace di trascendere le limitazioni tecniche del dispositivo di riproduzione. Montato come una sinfonia audiovisuale, Mettler, che ambisce al film come musica e alla musica come film, rivela che la postproduzione di “Scissere” “è stata un dialogo ininterrotto fra musica e cinema”. “Scissere” fu il primo film realizzato da uno studente di cinema presentato al Toronto Festival of Festivals (oggi Toronto International Film Festival).
A drug addict (Sandy Mac- Fayden), a young mother (Natalie Olanick), and an entomologist (Anthony Downes) overlap their lives’ journeys unaware. Peter Mettler took his inspiration for this film from Bruno Scissere, a heroin addict he met when he was serving at a rehabilitation clinic in Münsterlingen, Switzerland. “I was deeply charmed by his way of being. Nonetheless, the film is not a portrait of Bruno, but emulates that way of being kind and openminded through the possibilities offered by film.” Colour and B&W alternate, shots and photography are deeply manipulated: Mettler is positioned in a grey area where avant-garde and documentary are mingled inextricably, trying to achieve a degree of revelation that transcends the technical boundaries deriving from the medium. The film was edited like an audiovisual symphony. Mettler – who aspires to make film as music and music as film – admitted that Scissere’s post-production “was like a never ceasing dialogue of music and film.” Scissere was the first film realised by a film student ever presented at the Toronto Festival of Festivals (now Toronto International Film Festival).
