Abstract: Gus Victor (Stephen Ouimette) è rappresentante di antenne paraboliche satellitari la cui vita viene messa radicalmente in questione quando incontra casualmente la performance artist Lucy (Christie Mac Fayden) la cui strategia consiste nel coinvolgere persone ignare nei suoi eventi di terrorismo estetico. Attraverso Lucy e le sue azioni, la visione tecnocratica del mondo di Gus entra in crisi. I valori secondo i quali era solito pensare e organizzare la sua vita si rivelano nella loro inautenticità. Privo di un punto di orientamento, Gus tenta di ritrovare Lucy ma finisce per smarrirsi sempre più nella natura che circonda la sua città. Il film rappresenta il tentativo da parte di Mettler di calare le proprie strategie operative e poetica nel contesto più ampio dell’industria cinematografica canadese. Memore di certe atmosfere del cinema di Egoyan e dei primi cortometraggi sperimentali di Cronenberg, “The Top of His Head” rappresenta un ibrido potente e a tratti irrisolto fra le aspirazioni e le esigenze del regista e quelle dell’industria. “Realizzare questo film è stata una grande lezione. Quando disponi di molti soldi pensi di poter fare tutto. In realtà si verifica esattamente il contrario. Quei soldi erano una limitazione”.
Gus Victor (Stephen Ouimette) is a seller of satellite dishes. His life is deeply shaken when he haphazardly meets performance artist Lucy (Christie Mac Fayden). Her strategy consists in involving unaware people in her performances of aesthetic terrorism. Following Lucy and her actions, Gus’ technocratic outlook falls to pieces. The values that used to structure his life and thoughts are exposed in their inautentic nature. Having lost all sense of direction, Gus tries to find Lucy, but he ends up by getting lost in the wilderness surrounding his town. The film is an attempt on the part of Mettler to make his operative strategies and his poetics interact in a wider framework of film industry in Canada. Reminiscent of the atmosphere of Egoyan’s films, and Cronenberg’s early experimental shorts, “The Top of His Head” is a powerful and at times unachieved mongrel between the author’s aspirations and needs, and industry. “To make this film was a big lesson. You think you can count on all that money and you can do everything. Reality proved to be the opposite. Money was a limitation.”
