Oil in Alberta, Canada, does not spring from soil. It can neither be drilled nor pipelined. The soil must be excavated, bitumen must be collected and kneaded with ad-hoc chemicals that make it more fluid. The by-products of processing the Tar Sands rank among the most polluting factors of the globe. To fill one barrel of oil you need more than 1000 litres water mixed with hydrogen sulphide, nitrogen oxide, lead, and nickel. The mixture is then dumped in enormous holes in the sand, that form toxic lakes. Petropolis was shot for most part from a helicopter. It offers a unique outlook on the biggest bitumen extraction plant in the world. Its impact on the environment and on society is shocking: a tar deposit as large as England is flown over among hypnotic images and sounds. Peter Mettler was commissioned by Greenpeace to realize a movie that is much more than a mere reporting of an ecological disaster: it is also a suggestive and troublesome journey in a dehumanized world, entirely bent to big oil power. The environmental and social devastation is shown in all its blatancy and even touches on sublime. Or, as Kant wrote, the expression of an annihilating power before which man becomes aware of his limits
