Abstract: Brooklyn. New York. USA. Lì dove ‘concorrenza’ e ‘competizione’ sono una matrice culturale e giuridica, i “losers” (i perdenti) sono quelli che, meglio di altri, rappresentano la vera epica e lo spirito del Paese. I “losers” possono raccontare il sogno americano perché non ne sono abbagliati e nemmeno illusi. E se i “losers” di Brooklyn potessero raggrupparsi dietro un unico emblema, sarebbe certo quello dei Dodgers, mitica squadra di baseball che trasformò la sconfitta in una filosofia di vita. I Dodgers (ovvero ‘scrocconi’ o ‘poveracci’) si battevano a viso aperto contro i Giants e gli Yankees in quel tempio laico che era lo stadio di Ebbets Field, demolito nel 1960. Un barbone, un ex trombettista, un portuale sono i cantastorie di questo film che, dalla prospettiva di chi è stato sempre in basso o in basso è caduto, prova ad osservare il mondo in modo diverso. Ad ogni angolo fa capolino la Brooklyn della prima metà del ‘900, con le sue storie prive di compassione e di risentimento e piene zeppe d’amore, speranza, miracoli e… sconfitte.
Brooklyn, New York, USA. Where competition and competitiveness are a cultural and juridical matrix losers represent the true epic and spirit of the Country better than others do. Losers can describe the American dream because they are neither blinded nor fooled by it. If Brooklyn’s losers could join together under one emblem, it would be the Major League Baseball Dodgers. Over the New York years, the once Flatbush Avenue-now Los Angeles baseball team turned defeat into a sort of philosophy of life. Dodgers would fight openly against Giants and Yankees in that secular temple, Ebbets Field Stadium, itself a loser to the wrecking ball in 1960. A tramp, a dock worker, a former musician are among the storytellers in this film that attempts to look at the world from the perspective of those who have always been downtrodden or have arrived at that state. At every corner, we are offered glimpses of Brooklyn in the first half of the 20th century. Stories are devoid of pity and resentment but filled with love, hope, miracles, and yes, defeat.
