Abstract: Chi si nasconde dietro lo pseudonimo “Kurban Saïd”? Chi ha scritto l’avvincente romanzo d’amore tra una ragazza cristiana e un ragazzo musulmano ambientato nella regione del Caucaso? Pubblicato per la prima volta a Vienna nel 1937, “Ali & Nino” è un “meraviglioso romanzo, costruito in modo stupendo, vivido e persuasivo, una storia d’amore esotica e familiare al contempo” [P.Theroux] che è stata recentemente riscoperta, diventando un caso editoriale di culto. Partendo da questi spunti, De Putter costruisce un film che è un intrigo di identità nascoste e svelate, un gioco di scatole cinesi in cui ogni rivelazione è l’inizio di un nuovo inganno. Kurban Saïd è la baronessa austriaca Elfriede von Ehrenfels, viaggiatrice, ossessionata dalla figura di Platone. Kurban Saïd è anche Lev Nussimbaum, un ebreo azero convertito all’Islam, nato in Russia e finito a Positano a scrivere discorsi radiofonici per Mussolini. Kurban Saïd è il principe del deserto Essad Bey. Kurban Saïd è questo e altro ancora, una figura diasporica che è un romanzo in sé, capace di raccontare un’epoca passata e di anticipare tendenze future. Una figura in cui realtà e finzione si rincorrono e si corteggiano.
Who is concealed behind the alias “Kurban Saïd”? Who wrote the thrilling love story between a young Christian woman and an equally young Muslim man set in the Caucasian region? This “wonderful, very well-constructed novel that in a vivid and convincing way depicted a love story that sounds both exotic and familiar [Theroux]. “Ali & Nino” was published for the first time in Vienna in 1937. It has recently been rediscovered and has become a popular cult novel. Taking this as his starting point, Jos De Putter constructed a film of hidden and unravelled identities – a game of Chinese boxes where every revelation triggers off some new deception. Kurban Saïd is the Austrian baroness Elfriede von Ehrenfels, a traveller haunted by the figure of Plato. At the same time, Kurban Saïd is Lev Nussimbaum, a Russian-born Azerbaijani Jew who converted to Islam and ended up in Positano, writing radio speeches for Mussolini. Kurban Saïd is the Prince of the Desert Essad Bey. He is this and much more, a diaspora figure and a novel him/herself, as well as an author who can describe a long-past era but also foreshadow future trends. It is a personage where reality and fiction chase and court each other.
