Abstract: Sky ha 20 anni, viene dalla Cina ed è scappato di casa per potersi dedicare al suo gioco preferito. Grubby è olandese, ha appena un anno in più di Sky ed è considerato un artista nel suo campo, tanto da diventare una vera e propria star mondiale. Come in un duello all’ultimo sangue, i due si contenderanno il dominio di “Azeroth”, un mondo fantastico in cui vige la legge della spada e della magia, e in cui si fronteggiano le fazioni dell’Alleanza e dell’Orda. Entrambi competono per diventare i campioni mondiali di “Warcraft”, uno dei più importanti giochi di ruolo in rete. Tra scontri in campo aperto e incursioni improvvise, tra druidi e nani, tra folle di adolescenti estasiati e adoranti si svolge il “VII World Cyber Game”, la più grande e importante competizione di “video-gaming” al mondo. Jos de Putter ci conduce sulla linea di frontiera tra realtà e virtualità, mantendosi in sapiente equilibrio tra osservazione ed empatia con i protagonisti. Si tratta di un confine che separa e congiunge gli opposti, in cui ognuno usa schermi e maschere. Questo film avvincente e spiazzante, cerca di guardare oltre queste apparenze, alla disperata ricerca di qualcosa di più profondo: un mistero che risiede “Beyond the Game”.
ISky is 20 years old. He came from China, running away from home in order to be able to devote himself to his favourite game. Grubby is Dutch. He is just one year older than Sky, and he is considered an artist in his field, if not an actual world star. Like in a fight to the death, the two kids will dispute the lordship over “Azeroth”, a fantastic world where the law of magic and the sword rules. Two factions are fighting here, Alliance and Horde. They both compete for the title of World Champions of “Warcraft”, one of the most popular cyber games. It is the “VII World Cyber Game”, the biggest and most important video-gaming competition in the world, featuring open field fights vs. sudden raids, druids vs. midgets, among crowds of enraptured, adoring adolescents. Jos de Putter leads us to the borderline between reality and virtuality, while keeping wisely poised between the study of and sympathy with the protagonists. This is a borderline that simultaneously separates and unites two opposite worlds, where everyone uses screens and masks. This intriguing, surprising film attempts to look beyond appearances. It also desperately tries to find something deeper: a mystery lying “Beyond the Game”.
