Abstract: Elliott Carter, cittadino a vita di New York, rappresenta quasi un secolo di storia della musica. È considerato in tutto il mondo come uno dei più importanti compositori viventi, saldamente radicato nella tradizione europea. Per lui, lo scontro tra la tradizione europea e l'innovazione americana non è un ostacolo, ma una fonte di ispirazione. Il suo periodo creativo dura da più di 70 anni. Il rispetto di cui gode in tutto il mondo non si applica solo al suo lavoro, ma anche alla sua enorme dedizione alla cultura musicale. Nel dicembre del 2003, Elliott Carter ha raggiunto l'età di 95 anni. Nonostante l’età avanzata, questo maestro della musica moderna è ancora molto attivo nel creare nuove composizioni. The respect he enjoys throughout the world not only applies to his work, but also to his enormous dedication to music culture. In December 2003 Elliott Carter reached the age of 95. Despite his advanced age, this master of modern music is still very active in creating new compositions. In “A Labyrinth of Time”, experts like Daniel Barenboim, Charles Rosen and Pierre Boulez give their visions on Carter’s music. The film shows Carter’s musical development and reflects his compositions in time. The city of New York is used as a metaphor, because Carter describes his music as a reflection on the democratic society where we live in, where people have to cooperate and, at the same time, try to keep their own individuality.
