Abstract: Il regista esordiente S.A. Crary non avrebbe potuto scegliere un titolo più adatto per la sua vivida e complessa storia della scena art-punk di New York. Dopo tutto, come si fa a tracciare una linea temporale di un movimento per il quale il punto è ed è stato quello di rimproverare consapevolmente ciò che è venuto prima? First time film-maker S.A. Crary couldn't have picked a more apt title for his vivid and complex history of New York's art-punk scene. After all, how do you draw a timeline of a movement for which the point is and has been to consciously rebuke what came before you? In Crary's case, the answer is simply to let the players reflect the moment, which they often do with as much of an eye toward subtle subversion as toward any kind of objective truth. 'We weren't trying to make music, we were trying to be monsters,' says Teenage Jesus and the Jerks bassist Jim Sclavunos. He gets support for such claims from bandmate Lydia Lunch, DNA's Arto Lindsay, Glenn Branca, Thurston Moore and others in the late 70s/early 80s art-punk explosion. Exclusive interviews with these originators and a new generation of practitioners - from the Grammy nominated Yeah Yeah Yeahs to Black Dice to Liars to Gogol Bordello - reveals a consistent hunger for invention through subversion, motivations that come into cacophonous focus in the new and archival concert footage bridging the interviews.
