Abstract: “The Devil’s Miner” è un documentario impressionante e con una storia davvero insolita. Il film è ambientato in una vecchia ma ancora funzionante miniera d'argento a Cerro Rico, in Bolivia. I minatori sono per lo più Indios. In superficie, sono cattolici devoti, ma giù nella miniera, si applicano altre regole. Laggiù, c'è un altro Dio all'opera, o piuttosto il diavolo. Solo il diavolo può decidere se si trova una ricca vena d'argento, ed è per questo che i corridoi sono pieni di immagini misteriose per onorare il diavolo. Naturalmente una storia di minatori boliviani è anche una storia sociale. Questa storia è raccontata dalla prospettiva del giovane Basilio Vargas, che stima la propria età in 14 anni. Insieme a suo fratello minore, lavora in miniera ogni giorno. Non hanno un padre, quindi i fratelli devono guadagnarsi da vivere da soli. Sognano ad occhi aperti di trovare molto argento per poter fuggire e andare a scuola, ma questo futuro è tutt'altro che certo. Inoltre, i minatori non possono tenersi l’argento.
“The Devil’s Miner” is an impressive documentary with a very unusual story. The film is set in an old yet still-functioning silver mine in Cerro Rico, Bolivia. The miners are mostly of American Indian origin. Above ground, they are pious Catholics, but down in the mine, other rules apply. Down there, there is another God at work, or rather the devil. Only the devil can decide whether a rich vein of silver is found, and that’s why the corridors are full of mysterious images to honour the devil. Of course a story about Bolivian miners is also a social story. That story is told from the perspective of the young Basilio Vargas, who estimates his own age at 14. Together with his younger brother, he works in the mine every day. They don't have a father, so the brothers have to earn their own living. They daydream of finding a lot of silver so they can escape and goto school, butthat future is far from certain. In addition, the silver is not for the miners.
