Abstract: Quando consideri il tuo amante come un tuo nemico, la tua relazione diventa qualcosa di più complicato di una storia d’amore come le altre. Selim ed Ezra sono amanti intrappolati nel mezzo del conflitto israelo-palestinese. Selim è palestinese ed Ezra è israeliano. Samira e Edit si sono incontrati a una manifestazione. Anche loro sono amanti. Samira è palestinese, Edit è israeliana. Il documentario "Zero Degrees of Separation" conduce gli spettatori in un viaggio unico attraverso le complesse vite di gay e lesbiche israeliani e palestinesi in relazioni interetniche. Pur costretti ai margini della società, queste coppie sfidano la sorte, vivendo nel mezzo del conflitto con delicata umanità e rispetto reciproco. Intrecciata a queste storie c'è la ricca narrazione della regista Elle Flanders, cresciuta con nonni sionisti intimamente coinvolti nella fondazione dello stato di Israele. Calando il passato nel presente attraverso l'uso di filmati casalinghi, la regista ripercorre i viaggi dei suoi nonni mentre visitano una nazione nascente piena di giovani pionieri e gioiosi, immigrati, rifugiati e infiniti panorami aperti sulla Terra Santa. In netto contrasto, le immagini moderne dell'occupazione mostrano le crepe nelle fondamenta del paese. Di fronte a barriere infinite, i palestinesi di "Zero Degrees of Separation" devono costantemente deviare le strade, le loro case, le loro terre e le loro vite. E anche se la violenza è un'intrusione quotidiana, forse uno dei più grandi ostacoli all'esistenza quotidiana dei palestinesi è il bulldozer israeliano che distrugge le case, costruisce barriere, insediamenti, circonvallazioni, e fa a pezzi quel poco che resta di questa terra. Elle Flanders rifiuta la sensazionalistica copertura mediatica della violenza in Medio Oriente documentando il quotidiano di individui coraggiosi e sinceri che fanno piccoli passi verso la pace, il rispetto reciproco e la speranza.
When your lover is considered your enemy, your relationship may have more at stake than the average affair. Selim and Ezra are lovers caught in the midst of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Selim is Palestinian and Ezra is Israeli. Samira and Edit met at a demonstration. They too are lovers. Samira is Palestinian, Edit is Israeli. The documentary feature "Zero Degrees of Separation" takes viewers on a unique journey through the complex lives of Israeli and Palestinian gays anc lesbians in inter-ethnic relationships. Though living on the margins of society, these couples defy the odds, existing in the midst of conflict with a gentle humanity and mutual respect. Interwoven with these stories is director Elle Flanders' own rich narrative of growing up with Zionist grandparents intimately involved in the founding of the state of Israel. Drawing the past into the present through the use of home movies, the director retraces her grandparents’ travels as they tour a fledgling nation brimming with pioneering, joyou youth, immigrants, refugees and endless open vistas of the Holy Land. In stark contrast, the modern images of the Occupation expose the cracks in the country's foundation. Faced with endless barriers, the Palestinians in "Zero Degree of Separation" must constantly detour roads, their own homes, their lands and their lives. And though violence is a daily intrusion, perhaps one of the greatest obstacles to Palestinian daily existence is the Israeli bulldozer as it destroys homes, builds barriers, settlements, bypass roads, and tears up what little is left of this land. Elle Flanders breaks with the sensationalistic media coverage of the violence in the Middle East by documenting the everyday lives of courageous, outspoken individuals as they take small step towards peace, mutual respect and hope.
