Abstract: Alla fine di un viaggio di due anni attraverso i Balcani, la Turchia, l'Iran e mezza Asia, lo scrittore e fotografo ginevrino Nicolas Bouvier arriva nel 1955 in una piccola città sulla punta meridionale dello Sri Lanka. Lì, la fortuna che lo aveva accompagnato fino ad allora lo abbandona. In questa città fantasma che sembra essere popolata solo da demoni, tamburi e insetti, il giovane 26enne si trova di fronte a una quiete che non aveva mai conosciuto prima. Per nove mesi, è costretto ad ammettere che il suo viaggio si è fermato, senza sapere perché. Durante questo soggiorno, accade in lui qualcosa che cambierà il corso della sua vita, anche se in seguito non ne farà mai parola. Il film si propone di seguire le orme di Bouvier e scoprire cosa è successo all'Ile du Sourire. At the end of a two-year journey through the Balkans, Turkey, Iran and half of Asia, the Geneva writer and photographer Nicolas Bouvier arrived in 1955 in a small town at the southern tip of Sri Lanka. The luck that had accompanied him until then abandoned him. In this ghost town which seems to be populated only by demons, drums and insects, the 26 year old young man is confronted with such immobility as he had never known before. For nine months, he is forced to admit that his journey has come to a standstill, without knowing why. During this stay, something happens in him that will change the course of his life, even if he hardly ever talks about it afterwards. The film sets out to follow in Bouvier's footsteps and to discover what happened to him at the time on the Ile du Sourire. Little by little, we understand that this mysterious stay in Sri Lanka was decisive for the continuation of the journey of the Geneva photographer and author and that it is the starting point and the cornerstone of his conception of travel as a lesson in humility.
