Abstract: “City of Photos” esplora il fenomeno bizzarro e del tutto indiano degli studi fotografici e delle ragioni della loro incredibile popolarità. In posa su vari sfondi, da quelli panoramici (cascate, fiori) a quelli sorprendenti (immagini delle torri gemelle in fiamme, incidenti ferroviari), le persone sembrano stare davanti all'obiettivo come prova della loro vita e della loro esistenza, quasi in barba alle circostanze. In questi studi, la “realtà” può essere ritoccata e resa migliore, le immagini vengono abbellite e alterate. Se un fidanzamento viene annullato, l'altra metà viene semplicemente cancellata dalla foto. L'illusione diventa reale e il reale diventa l'illusione.
“City of Photos” explores the bizarre and entirely Indian phenomenon of photo studios and the reasons for their incredible popularity. Posing against various backgrounds from the scenic (waterfalls and flowers) to the surprising (images of the burning twin towers, train crashes) the people seem to stand before the lens as proof of their life and existence in defiance almost of the circumstances. “Reality” in these studios can be retouched and made better, images beautified and altered. If an engagement is called off, the other partner is simply erased from the images. The illusion becomes real and the real becomes the illusion.
