Abstract: Tra la fine di ottobre ed i primi di novembre si svolge in Messico la tradizionale Festa dei Morti. I mercati sono pieni di fiori, di “calaveras” (teschi) di zucchero, di candele e copal e del tipico “pan de muerto”. Nelle case si iniziano ad allestire gli altari con le offerte per i propri defunti. Attraverso un dialogo tra le immagini ed alcuni brani tratti dai resoconti aztechi e spagnoli della Conquista del Messico, prende corpo la performance della Fiesta de Los Muertos, espressione sincretica di antiche tradizioni preispaniche e credenze cattoliche. La notte del 31 ottobre gli indios zapotechi, del villaggio di Atzompa, situato a pochi chilometri da Oaxaca, si recano al cimitero portando cibo, fotografie, alcool, sigarette e tutto ciò che piaceva al familiare defunto e trascorrono la notte “in attesa” dei propri cari. Seguendo il sentiero tracciato dal fumo del copal e dai petali dei fiori, le anime arrivano nelle case dei familiari per ristorarsi dopo il lungo viaggio. La festa continua nei giorni successivi con la “comparsa de enmascarados”, persone mascherate che si aggirano, danzando e suonando tra le case del villaggio, per indurre le anime a tornare da dove sono venute, sancendo il ritorno al tempo profano della quotidianità.
Between the end of October and the beginning of November, the traditional Festival of the Dead takes place in Mexico. The markets are full of flowers, sugar calaveras (skulls), candles and copal and the typical “pan de muertos”. In the homes, altars are being set up with offerings for deceased relatives. Through a dialogue between the images and some passages taken from Aztec and Spanish accounts of the Conquest of Mexico, the performance of the “Fiesta de Los Muertos” takes shape, a syncretic expression of ancient pre-Hispanic traditions and Catholic beliefs. On the night of October 31st, the Zapotec Indians of the village of Atzompa, located a few kilometers from Oaxaca, go to the cemetery bringing food, photographs, alcohol, cigarettes and everything that the deceased family member liked and spend the night waiting for their loved ones. Following the path traced by copal smoke and flower petals, the souls arrive at the homes of family members to refresh themselves after the long journey. The celebration continues in the following days with the “comparsa de enmascarados”, masked people who wander, dancing and playing music among the houses of the village, to induce the souls to return to where they came from, sanctioning the return to the profane time of everyday life.
