Abstract: Ibogaine - Rite of Passage è un documentario sull'uso della controversa sostanza ibogaina per il trattamento della dipendenza. L'ibogaina è una sostanza che deriva da una pianta africana, usata durante le iniziazioni della cultura Bwiti in Gabon. Negli anni sessanta le proprietà anti-dipendenza furono scoperte da Howard Lotsof, che all'epoca era un eroinomane americano. Poco dopo la sua scoperta, l'ibogaina divenne illegale negli Stati Uniti. L'ibogaina è circondata da controversie e le compagnie farmaceutiche non mostrano alcun interesse per questa sostanza. È per ragioni economiche o per i suoi effetti allucinogeni? Cy (34 anni) ha usato una miscela di eroina e anfetamina per circa 11 anni, ma i suoi tre figli e le sue ambizioni sono più importanti per lui. Dare un calcio alla sua dipendenza è un compito difficile che tira fuori tutte le emozioni represse. Massavou (22 anni) vive nel villaggio Mitone in Gabon. Per lei l'iniziazione tradizionale africana fa parte di un processo di guarigione. Ha sofferto di una malattia per più di un anno e spera che ingerire la pianta sacra sia il punto di partenza di una nuova fase della sua vita. Questo documentario mostra i diversi aspetti di questa sostanza speciale per mezzo di esperienze personali e spiegazioni di ex tossicodipendenti, fornitori di cure ed esperti.
Ibogaine - Rite of Passage is a documentary about the use of the controversial substance ibogaine for the treatment of addiction. Ibogaine is a substance that is derived from an African plant, which is used during initiations of the Bwiti culture in Gabon. In the Sixties the anti-addictive properties were discovered by Howard Lotsof, who was an American heroin addict at that time. Shortly after his discovery, Ibogaine became illegal in the US. Ibogaine is surrounded by controversy and the pharmaceutical companies show no interest in this substance. Is it because of economical reasons or its hallucinogenic effects? Cy (34) has been using a mixture of heroine and amphetamine for about 11 years, but his three children and his ambitions are more valuable to him. Kicking his addiction is a tough job for him. It reveals all his suppressed emotions. Massavou (22) lives in the village Mitone in Gabon. For her the traditional African initiation is part of a healing process. She suffered from an illness for more than a year and she hopes that eating the holy plant will be the starting point of a new phase in her life. This revealing documentary shows the different aspects of this special substance by means of personal experiences and explanations of ex-addicts, treatment providers and experts.
