Abstract: Quale giovane donna lascerebbe New York per avere il suo primo figlio in una zona di guerra? Chi sceglierebbe di partorire in un luogo dove i bambini vengono fatti saltare in aria mentre viaggiano sugli scuolabus o sono seduti nei caffè? Dove migliaia di diciottenni uccidono o vengono uccisi come soldati? Io sono quella donna. Sono tornata a casa per far nascere le mie figlie in Israele. Volevo crescerle nella mia terra Sion, la terra dei miei antenati, la terra che amo. Ora, 16 anni dopo, le mie figlie saranno presto abbastanza grandi per entrare nell'esercito ed essere costrette a difendere uno Stato e i suoi miti che stanno facendo a pezzi la mia patria. Perché scelgo di restare? In un viaggio attraverso rocce e campi, e attraverso tre generazioni di israeliani, incontro i miti che hanno formato lo Stato e me. Affronto le azioni dei miei genitori e le speranze delle mie figlie. Visito una sopravvissuta all'Olocausto e ascolto i dubbi di suo figlio, uno storico e un genitore, come me. Mi confronto con una colona ebrea il cui marito è stato ucciso da un militante palestinese e incontro una ragazza palestinese che vive in Israele. Ho scelto io di vivere nella terra dei miei antenati e ora è anche la casa delle mie figlie. Uno Stato di miti e sacrifici, dove i nostri figli e le nostre figlie crescono ancora per uccidere o farsi uccidere. Come posso restare in uno stato che divora i suoi figli?
What young woman would leave New York to have her first child in a war zone? Who would choose to give birth in a place where kids get blown up riding on school buses or sitting in cafes? Where thousands of eighteen-years-olds kill or get killed as soldiers? I am that woman. I went home to give birth to my daughters in Israel. I wanted to raise them in my land Zion, the land of my ancestors, the land that I love. Now, 16 years later, my daughters will soon be old enough to join the Army, and be forced to defend a state and its myths that are tearing my homeland apart. Why do I choose to stay? On a journey through rocks and fields, and across three generations of Israelis, I encounter the myths that shaped the state and me. I confront the actions of my parents and the hopes of my daughters. I visit a Holocaust survivor and hear the doubts of her son, a historian and a parent, like me. I confront a Jewish settler whose husband was killed by a militant Palestinian and I meet a Palestinian girl who lives in Israel. It was my choice to live in the land of my ancestors and now it is my daughters home, too. A state of myths and sacrifices, where our sons and daughters still grow up to kill or get killed. How can I stay in a state that devours its children?
