Abstract: Manon ha quindici anni, Greg diciassette. Si sono incontrati a Claviers, piccolo paese nel Haut Var. Manon, che abita a Parigi, ci trascorre le vacanze estive; Greg lavora col padre nella panetteria locale. Tra di loro la macchina da presa di Claire Simon, regista, interlocutrice dei due e madre di Manon. Nonostante le differenze geografiche e sociali, la giovane coppia sembra intenzionata a fare sul serio. Si amano e progettano la loro vita insieme. Manon aiuta Greg a studiare per prendere il porto d’armi. Lui la accompagna in spiaggia e sopporta la stanchezza nonostante le notti passate al forno. “In 800 km de différence Manon e Greg diventano una ragazza e un ragazzo: perciò è un film che mi piace molto, anche se la critica mi ha attaccata, dicendo che non era possibile filmare la propria figlia in quel modo. So che può essere concepito come intrusione da parte del regista; ma io ho scelto di essere cineasta. Non ho scelto di essere madre in questo film. Non prendo posizione sulla storia tra Greg e Manon. Al contempo non cerco di scappare dal mio posto, un posto che ho certamente costruito ad arte”.
Manon is fifteen, Greg seventeen. They met in Claviers, a small village in the Haut Var. Manon, who lives in Paris, is on summer vacation; Greg works with his father in the local bakery. Between them is Claire Simon, who is the director, the couple’s interlocutor as well as Manon’s mother. Despite their geographic and class differences, the young couple seems intent on taking things seriously. In love, they plan their life together. Manon helps Greg study to get his gun license. He takes her to the beach, despite his exhaustion from nights spent in the bakery. “In 800 km de difference, Manon and Greg become boy and girl, that’s why I like the film so much; even as I criticize it I am attached to it, saying it wasn’t possible to film one’s own daughter that way. I know it can be seen as intrusive on the director’s part, but I chose to be a filmmaker. I did not choose to be the mother in this film. I don’t take a position on the story between Greg and Manon. At the same time, I’m not trying to abandon my role, a role I certainly made into art.”
