Abstract: Arrivato ad un momento cruciale della propria vita, il regista Herz Frank compie un'improvvisa virata verso il passato, alla ricerca delle ragioni dell'esistenza. Il viaggio retrospettivo incrocia personaggi incontrati nel corso della sua attività professionale, ma anche momenti intimi, affrontati con coraggio e dolore. Composto per gran parte da inquadrature provenienti dai suoi film precedenti, “Flashback” è un documento unico, che rivela una personale percezione del mondo. Il film si apre con una dichiarazione del regista: “Dopo quarant'anni trascorsi lavorando sentii che ero stanco di filmare la vita degli altri. Qualcosa dentro di me si era rotto?”. Un pungente manifesto di autoanalisi, dunque, opera che sviscera la personalità dell'autore in modo intenso. Le scene dell'operazione al cuore subita dal regista sono filmate dagli amici. Avvicinandosi alla fine della sua vita creativa, Herz Frank ricapitola il proprio percorso pronunciandosi sulla ricerca della verità e facendoci pensare al significato e al destino della missione di un documentarista.
Arriving at a crucial moment in his life, director Herz Frank, takes a sudden turn towards his past in search of the meaning of Life. His retrospective journey takes him across the paths of people that he met in the course of his professional life, as well as his personal life, which he faces with courage and pain. For the most part composed of footage from his previous films, Flashback is a unified piece that reveals a personal perception of the world. The film opens with the statement of the director: “After forty years of working, I felt tired of filming other people's lives. Had something inside me broken?” A biting manifesto of self analysis, a work that intensively disembowels the personality of the author himself. The scenes of the heart surgery on the author are filmed by his friends. Getting closer to the end of his creative life, Herz Frank sums up his own path declaring the search for truth, and making us think about the meaning and destiny of the filmmaker's mission.
