Abstract: Un cortile di una scuola materna si trasforma al suono della campanella: da spazio vuoto a palcoscenico animato. Liberi dalla stretta sorveglianza delle maestre, i piccoli giocano a simulare gli adulti. C’è chi con crudeltà trasforma il cancello scolastico nelle sbarre della prigione; chi con estrema determinazione ricostruisce una casa e trova una compagna; chi fa prova di forza con il prossimo, chi si mette a raccogliere bastoncini; chi vorrebbe saltare una panchina ma non riesce a superare le sue paure. “L’idea per il documentario mi venne accompagnando mia figlia alla scuola materna. Osservavo i bambini prepararsi ad entrare in classe: per qualche minuto assistevo ai «drammi» che poi sono diventati la materia di “Récréations”. Io mi proietto molto nei bambini e quanto vedevo era straziante e brutale. Mi sono detta: ‘La vera vita comincia qui! Quelli che ne escono sapranno sempre cavarsela’. Ho concepito il film seguendo il principio che non bisognava uscire dal quel cortile. Non doveva essere un film sull’educazione, sulle maestre. Io volevo filmare il teatro del cortile, disegnare la topografia affettiva di quel cortile” (C. Simon).
When the bell rings, the courtyard of a nursery school transforms from an empty space to an animated stage. Feeling freed from the watchful eye of the teachers, the little ones pretend to be adults. There are the cruel ones, who transform the fence around the courtyard into prison bars. There are those, who with extreme determination, build a house and find a new land. The ones who put the strength of others to the test. There are those who simply gather sticks. Then there are those who want to jump over the benches, but just can't seem to manage to overcome their fears. “The idea for this documentary came to me while accompanying my daughter to nursery school. I observed the children as they prepared to enter into the classroom, and for some moments I participated in the drama that would become the subject of “Récréations”. I see myself in these children, and what I saw was heartrending and brutal. I said to myself, ‘Real life begins here! Those who make it through will always know how to manage.’ When I conceived the film I stuck to the idea that we didn’t need to go outside of that courtyard. It didn't need to be a film about education or teachers. I wanted to capture the drama of the courtyard and to demonstrate the emotional make-up of that courtyard” (C. Simon).
