Abstract: Il film nasce durante i giorni di grande euforia che videro il raggiungimento dell'indipendenza da parte della Lituania. L'idea era di catturare con la macchina da presa il primo respiro di libertà del paese. “Era un periodo di euforia politica – i primi tentativi di combattere il vacillante regime sovietico – quando, ancora parte dell'Unione Sovietica, per la prima volta ci siamo alzati in piedi per rivendicare che non avevamo paura dei loro blindati, delle possibili deportazioni o di altre forme di repressione. Volevamo ufficialmente onorare i nostri parenti che erano morti in nome della libertà. Volevamo anche dichiarare che eravamo tutti uniti per raggiungere un comune e unico scopo: essere liberi. In quel giorno memorabile io e il mio amico Audrius Stonys andammo al Lithuanian Film Studio a dare una mano a filmare quest'importante evento. Ma quelli che di solito erano interessati in questo genere di cose si rifiutarono di girare o dissero che non ne valeva la pena. Più tardi venimmo a sapere che avevano ricevuto questo «consiglio» dal Segretario Capo del Partito Comunista” (A. Matelis).
The film grew out of the days of utter euphoria that saw the ushering in of Lithuanian independence. The idea was to capture the first breath of the country's freedom on camera. “It was a period of political euphoria - the first attempts to fight the failing Soviet regime. While still a part of the Soviet Union, we stood up for the first time to demonstrate that we were not afraid of their armored cars, the chance of being deported or other forms of repression. We wanted to officially honor our relatives that had died in the name of freedom. We also wanted to declare that we were all united in a single, common goal: to be free. On that unforgettable day, my friend Audrius Stonys and I went to the Lithuanian Film Studio to record the important event with the camera. But even the most interested parties refused to film, or said it wasn't worth it. Later we learned they had received that «advice» from the Secretary of the Communist Party” (A. Matelis).
